THE FINISHED CENTOTAPH:
"A building is most alive when it exhibits change, when the patterns of its shadows reflect the seasons, and when, over many years . its weathering and staining occur so that we know it was expected and planned for" Abercrombie, S, 1984,167). Taken from Architecture as art.


The above image is an example of existing building typology found at the Howard Smith Wharves site; Above ground air raid shelters constructed from concrete blocks, sewer pipe and formed concrete relics of WW2, products of fear long since forgotten.

The fished cenotaph render at the very top is hopefully evidently derivative of the existing typology and therefore will be integrated effortlessly with the site.


The above image is a perfect 'parti' diagram for the entire project: a contemporary looking concrete bunker cast in-situ, lying in ruin, slowly being reclaimed by nature.

Egg Vase by Marcel Wanders. The vase was created by putting several hard boiled eggs into a condom and taking a mold. It has a very organic/ parasitic aesthetic.

The yellow parasitic domes of the mountain retreat by General Design Company, Japan have a very similar aesthetic to the cenotaph whilst they are not direct inspiration for the memorial they do share distinct similarities in their form. This picture was stolen from www.thecoolhunter.com.au



THIS RENDER OFFERS AN INSIGHT INTO THE MATERIALS CHOSEN FOR THE PROJECT AND ALSO ATTEMPTS TO CONVEY WHAT THE STRUCTURE MAY LOOK LIKE IN THE FUTURE AS THE GENTLE PATINA OF TIME TAKES ITS TOLL ON THE STRUCTURE.




THE PARASITIC SHELL WORKS AS A KIND OF EXOSKELETON, MIMICKING NATURE, SHELLS, RIB CAGES, INVERTEBRATES AND VARI0US PARASITIC ORGANISMS.

THE CENOTAPH IS SEEN IN CONTEXT IN THIS RENDER. ATTACHED TO THE ROOF OF CAMERON'S MARTIAL ARTS COMPLEX AND JULIE'S THEATER.

PARASITE INTERGRATED WITH THE OTHER STRUCTURES, LATCHED ONTO THE ROOF OF MR ANDERSONS DOJO BLEEDING IT DRY.

THIS VIGNETTE EXPLAINS THE EMPTY BULLET CASINGS AS A TECTONIC ELEMENT UNDERFOOT. THE SOUND OF EMPTY SHELLS BEING DISPLACED BY THE USER CONJURES IMAGES OF WAR AND A SENSE OF REALLY BEING IN A BUNKER AFTER A BATTLE.

THE VINES ATTEMPT TO RE-CLAIM THE STRUCTURE OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. EVENTUALLY THE PARASITIC SHELL, WILL BE ENVELOPED IN GREEN, FINALLY INTEGRATING THE MEMORIAL WITH THE SITE.

FIBERGLASS STRUCTURE ACTS AS A PROTECTIVE SENTRY OVER EXPOSED CENOTAPH.ANCHORING THE CONCRETE STRUCTURE TO ITS SURROUNDS.


ANGULAR FRAME ENCASING THE MEMORIAL, PERHAPS CONSTRUCTED USING RHS STEEL FENCING PARTS AND KNUCKLES.


A CLUSTER OF GEOMETRIC SPHERES AS AN ALTERNATIVE.


THE PINK RECTANGULAR FORM REPRESENTS THE CENTOTAPH HOUSED IN THE PROTECTIVE PARASITIC SHELL. LIKE A STEEL FAMED COCOON. THE COCOON HAS THE ABILITY TO ATTACH ITSELF TO THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS AND OVER TIME WITH THE HELP OF NATURE WILL BECOME A SEAMLESS INTEGRATION INTO THE LANDSCAPE.



THIS ACCIDENTAL BALL OF FUR IS FURTHER CATALYST TO USE THE STRUCTURE AS A KIND OF 'GREEN SCAFFOLDING' AROUND MY MEMORIAL, THE STEEL FRAME WILL BE HOST TO GREEN ORGANIC MATTER THAT WILL OVER TIME RE-CLAIM THE STRUCTURE.
